In the wake of the assassination attempt against former President Donald Trump, it’s helpful to consider how the political temperature got so high in the country and examine where the dangerous rhetoric comes from. Peter Schweizer and Eric Eggers did just that during a recent episode of The Drill Down.
And wouldn’t you know it, the Biden campaign and its surrogates contributed heavily to the idea that Donald Trump is a threat to the country, to democracy, and every American.
“We’re now having this national conversation about words and language, did they contribute? Did they somehow motivate what happened in the assassination attempt on Trump?” Schweizer asked.
“In a private donor call, Joe Biden said it’s time to get past this debate and put Trump in a bullseye,” Eggers said. “And it’s one word and one phrase, and no one’s going to say that phrase is why what happened in Pennsylvania happened. But it’s words and phrases like that — and I think it’s the larger culture — that’s been permitted to exist that I think it’s absolutely fair to hold under a microscope.”
Vice Presidential candidate JD Vance shared similar thoughts about the assassination attempt on X, saying “Today is not just some isolated incident. The central premise of the Biden campaign is that President Donald Trump is an authoritarian fascist who must be stopped at all costs. That rhetoric led directly to President Trump’s attempted assassination.”

Vance shared the post on X before being named Trump’s Vice President. And, despite it being absolutely true, Democrats piled on the Ohio Senator, arguing that the post should disqualify him from the Veep search.
“If @JDVance1 is on the short list for VP, this Tweet, sent an hour after the assassination attempt in PA, ought to disqualify him in the eyes of the Trump campaign. Wrong vibe in that moment. And as we now are learning, the gunman’s profile doesn’t seem to match Vance’s premise. But at least wait and see! Trump probably doesn’t want a shoot-from-the-hip VP,” said CNN commentator and former Obama strategist David Axelrod.

X account Insurrection Barbie shared a supercut of Democrats using violent language directed towards Donald Trump and conservatives more than a month before Trump was shot: “Every time the lying left tries to selectively edit a clip of Trump to make it seem like he is advocating for any kind of violence. Send them this. The left is the party of violent uprisings, dangerous rhetoric and low-life behavior supercut.”
