Maine Democrats may be doing Republicans’ work for them.
GAU Vice President Eric Eggers told David Pollack that the party’s eight-candidate Senate forums looked less like serious politics and more like a political mockumentary.
“It was like a cross between a Christopher Guest movie,” Eggers said, describing “community theater with all these ridiculous characters and, like, the Australian breakdancer.”
Eggers said the spectacle mattered because the candidates were not a random collection of activists. Party gatekeepers selected them.
“The eight people that made it to the stage were a handpicked, curated cross-section of what the Democratic Party looks like in the state of Maine,” he said.
The candidate Eggers considered the most normal, a beer-company owner, reportedly failed to reach the top four. “Something is wrong with the Democratic Party in Maine,” Eggers concluded.
He tied the debacle to Democrats’ earlier embrace of Graham Platner, whose candidacy became engulfed by sexual assault allegations and scrutiny over a tattoo and past Reddit activity. Platner denied the sexual assault allegation before leaving the race.
On the Republican side, Eggers urged conservatives frustrated with Sen. Susan Collins to consider what he jokingly called the “political theory of relativity.” Collins may not be the ideal conservative, Eggers said, but Republicans have little room for error in a closely divided Senate.
“At least she can get up and go to the office and cast a vote,” he said.
Eggers acknowledged that Collins trails a generic Democrat in polling, but pointed to her history of finishing campaigns strongly.
The Maine Democratic field may be crowded. Eggers’ verdict was uncomplicated: Republicans could hardly have chosen it better themselves.
