The United States was once a nation that respected those who fought for our freedom; now, it seems to place a stronger value on celebrity status. Griner, a WNBA star, was arrested in February for illegal possession of THC-oil cartridges in Russia. Despite claiming she had no intent on bringing or using them in Russia, she was taken into custody, tried, and sentenced to nine years in prison.
On December 8th, Griner was exchanged for Victor Bout, one of the world’s most wanted men prior to his arrest in 2008. Paul Whelan, a former United States Marine, continues to sit in a Russian prison for a crime he claims he did not commit. Biden Press Secretary Karine Jean-Pierre says that the choice Russia presented to American negotiators was, “bring Brittney home or no one.”
