Key Points

New reports lend credence to the Wuhan lab leak theory.

According to former State Department official David Asher, who helped lead investigations into the origins of COVID-19 under the Trump administration, the U.S. received warnings from France as early as 2015 regarding China’s increasingly reckless behavior in the Wuhan lab.

In 2004, France and China collaborated on the lab buildout. “The French envisioned the Wuhan institute as an open and transparent lab that would serve the global scientific community in studying potential pandemics,” The Daily Caller reports. “While top French politicians supported the collaboration, French security and defense experts did not.”

And with good reason.

A decade later, the Chinese began to cut back on the collaboration, forcing French officials out of the process. But, by then, French scientists had already provided the Chinese with everything they needed for the lab: designs, technology, and biosafety training (training that would quickly be forgotten).

According to The Federalist, “France was formally ‘kicked out’ of the lab in 2017, which resulted in foreign officials contacting the U.S. to let officials know. In January 2021, prior to the Biden administration assuming office, the State Department alleged that the lab had been used by China military research for classified research since at least 2017.”

In January 2018, a State Department cable paints a worrisome picture of an unprepared lab: “The new lab has a serious shortage of appropriately trained technicians and investigators needed to operate this high-containment laboratory.”

Despite mounting evidence, the lab leak theory continues to live on the fringe. But why?

Former Food and Drug Administration commissioner Scott Gottlieb said it best when he said, “the lab leak theory doesn’t seem like a plausible theory unless you aggregate the biggest collection of coronaviruses and put them in a lab, a minimum-security lab in the middle of a densely populated center and experiment on animals, which is exactly what the Wuhan Institute of Virology did.”

Will we ever know the truth? Maybe not – the Chinese government isn’t cooperating. On Multiple occasions they’ve failed to provide information on blocked biological records and research. The World Health Organization is all but letting them off the hook.
