Seamus Bruner, Director of Research at the Government Accountability Institute, is sounding the alarm about what he calls a stunning alignment between Vermont Senator Bernie Sanders’ AI agenda and the Chinese Communist Party’s interests — one that GAI is now actively investigating.
Sanders recently called on the U.S. to invite leading Chinese scientists to the Capitol to discuss AI. He’s also proposing a data center moratorium bill, which would tie all new data center construction to congressional passage of a separate AI safety bill.

“I suppose it shouldn’t come as any surprise that the socialist senator from Vermont has invited the communist Chinese to a seat at the table for writing the rules for the greatest technological arms race in human history. I think it’s insane. Even Bernie Sanders’ Democrat colleagues call it idiocy and waving the surrender flag,” Bruner says.
“I just can’t believe that he invited literal CCP agents from universities backed by the CCP to the U.S. Capitol to debate whether we should regulate AI according to China’s standards,” Bruner said. “It’s insane.”
“I don’t know if he wants China to win or if he wants America to lose. Certainly, the latter seems more likely based on his entire career of what he’s pushed throughout his time in the Senate, in Congress.”
GAI is currently investigating Sanders’ recent funding sources, raising the possibility that the moratorium push is being driven not by genuine AI safety concerns — but by financial incentives.
“I think what we need to do right now — and what we’re doing at the Government Accountability Institute — is look into Bernie Sanders’ more recent funding, because he may be just doing this as a ruse to get more funding.”
