‘The Policy is Still Dead - the Court-Ordered Relaunch is All for Show’

Key Points

  • Since resuming the ‘Remain in Mexico’ policy, the Biden administration has only enrolled 267 migrants.
  • Biden doesn’t like the policy and has done everything he can to create exemptions for migrants.
  • More than 178,000 migrant encounters were logged in December.

Migrant Protection Protocols, aka MPP, aka the ‘Remain in Mexico’ policy isn’t exactly what it used to be. In fact, since being forced to relaunch the program via court-order, the Biden administration has done everything it can to undermine it.

Biden doesn’t like it —he vocally denounced it —and repealed it his first month in office.

But now it’s back and he’s stuck with it.

MPP empowers Border Patrol to turn migrants around if they don’t have proper documentation. They can then wait in Mexico until it’s time for their court date in the U.S.. Under President Trump, nearly 70,000 migrants were placed in MPP; under Biden, just 267.

Why so low? Exemptions. Biden’s broken border is more porous than ever.

Fox News recently reported on a DHS document that outlines exemptions asylum seekers can claim to avoid enrollment in MPP. Once exempt, migrants are given court dates and released into the United States, mostly unsupervised (aka “catch and release”).

“According to the document, asylum seekers can be unenrolled from MPP should government officials identify ‘particular vulnerabilities’ such as claiming they are gay or transgender. All asylum seekers who claim they have a fear of being returned to Mexico may be provided a legal representative or consultant,” the Washington Free Beacon reports.

“The Biden administration has said it would comply with the court order to restart MPP “in good faith”—language that provided broad wiggle room to change the program from what it looked liked under the previous administration,” WFB adds.

“MPP is still dead, and the court-ordered relaunch is all for show. We know it and so do migrants and smugglers,” said R.J. Hauman, director of government relations and communications at the Federation for American Immigration Reform. “Border numbers are still through the roof. … The Biden administration isn’t acting in good faith—they’re mocking the courts.”

Border patrol logged 173,000 migrant encounters in November —178,000 in December. And now we know DHS let more than 47,000 migrants into the country unsupervised. Add to that Biden’s illegal migrant airline scheme that has prominent GOP members yelling “impeach!” and the 12,000 lbs of fentanyl seized by Texas law enforcement that could have killed 222 million Americans…

Crisis is the only word for it.

Time for the Biden Administration to get serious about MPP.
