President Biden stated that current prices for various goods are nearing “pre-pandemic levels in the U.S.,” claiming gas prices are decreasing. However, according to Fox News, that is not the case, as gas and other products still cost much more than before the pandemic.
In attendance with others in his administration, President Biden gave his assurances publicly, while providing information on proposed measures to help Americans and their families. As the midterm elections near, Biden is attempting to economically reassure voters, especially since polls show an unfavorable cycle for Democratic candidates.
President Biden has previously made questionable claims and assurances regarding inflation and about dealings with his son, Hunter. In addition, Biden administration policies, specifically concerning the environment, have contributed to previous and current increases in gas prices.
While Biden claims that there has been “serious progress” in lowering prices to near pre-pandemic levels, inflation is still high with $3.76 as the national average per gallon for gas, according to AAA. In contrast, the national average per gallon before the pandemic, specifically in February 2020, was $2.51.
In addition, groceries and clothing items still cost much more than before the pandemic. According to a September Consumer Price Index report, over the past year, there was a 30.5% increase in the cost of eggs; a 15.7% increase in coffee; 7.3% increase in women’s attire; and a 10.1% increase in “furniture and bedding.”
Biden is also attempting to label Republicans as hazardous to the U.S. economy as the midterms draw near. According to polls, voters consider inflation and the economy high priority issues, but have more faith in Republicans to efficiently deal with such problems.
In a speech this week at Democratic National Committee headquarters, President Biden claimed there would be dire consequences for U.S. programs and the economy if Republicans came out ahead in Congress. In response to these comments, the Republican National Committee pushed back, stating that “[v]oters know Democrat [sic] control of Washington delivered higher prices, more crime, and a nation headed in the wrong direction.”
Considering other polling statistics, President Biden’s support is at 39%, a decrease from Democratic numbers during the summer. Only 33% of voters would also re-elect Biden according to a Fox News Poll. Furthermore, an AP poll shows that 45% of voters will most likely vote for a Democratic candidate in the midterms, while 49% would most likely choose a Republican candidate.
