Peter Schweizer’s New York Times bestseller Red-Handed: How American Elites Get Rich Helping China Win opened eyes to just how many of America’s biggest corporations, politicians, tech giants, and athletes have sold out to China —they love looking the other way on human rights atrocities to make a quick buck.

The Bidens, Bill Gates, Lebron James, many ex-members of congress…It’s a long and disheartening list.

But not many people challenge the Walt Disney Company for its China ties. Maybe it’s the lovable characters — the mainstream media standing steadfastly behind Mickey, Goofy, Donald and the rest. Now, according to a report from Fox News, at least one shareholder is challenging the Magic Kingdom for being complicit in Chinese genocide.

“The Walt Disney Company was confronted at its annual shareholder meeting Wednesday by an activist shareholder who accused the company of ‘complicity in China genocide,’ claiming the entertainment giant was being hypocritical for pulling its business away from Russia over human rights abuses but turning a blind eye to atrocities committed in China,” Fox News reports.

“The shareholder was the National Legal and Policy Center, an ethics watchdog that proposed a resolution requiring Disney to conduct an annual due diligence report ‘evaluating the human rights impacts of its business and associations with foreign entities,’ including foreign nations.”

The resolution, not surprisingly, failed.

The resolution was presented by Paul Chesser, director of the NLPC’s Corporate Integrity Project. Chesser blasted Disney for claiming the report would be a waste of resources.

“They had the time and money to film ‘Mulan’ in the part of communist China with among the most disgusting and egregious human rights violations in the world – in Xinjiang,” Chesser said in his remarks, referencing the Chinese province where more than a million Uyghur Muslims have been detained in concentration camps and purportedly used as slave labor,” Fox reports.

“Meanwhile, Disney executives say they will not release any new films in Russia due to Vladimir Putin’s aggression against Ukraine,” Chesser continued. “Since when do ESG (Economic, Social, Government socially conscious standards) principles mean you get to support genocidal regimes in Asia, but you must oppose colonial warmongering in Europe?”

“There seems to be a cognitive dissonance between how these major corporations, including Disney, are treating the whole Russia-Ukraine situation: ‘We’re going to disinvest in Russia,’ and so forth,” Chesser told Fox Business. “But they’re not looking at China, whose human rights violations … have been verified and documented by the State Department under both [Presidents] Trump and Biden.”

Putin’s war on Ukraine has raised awareness for everyday Americans as to where their favorite companies have financial interests: 850 McDonald’s locations in Russia, Starbucks stores, Pepsi. Now people are wondering, “Well, where else are you making money? And is it above board?”

With major corporations like McDonald’s and Disney, the answers are they make money everywhere they can —and no, it’s usually contingent on ignoring certain practices and policies that aren’t exactly in line with the “American Way.”

Quite unfortunately.
