GAI Vice President Eric Eggers joined Riley Lewis on The Real Story to discuss Florida Governor Ron DeSantis’ billion-dollar insurance reform victory.
While in Sarasota earlier this month, DeSantis said Florida’s insurance reforms are cutting rates, attracting insurers, reducing lawsuits, and delivering “significant savings for Florida consumers.”
DeSantis said that, thanks to these improvements, Progressive will refund nearly $1 billion to Florida auto insurance policyholders, “reflecting reduced losses and strong savings tied directly to the state’s tort and insurance reform efforts.”
“Florida’s insurance market is stabilizing with decreasing auto and home insurance rates, and frivolous litigation is declining,” the governor said.
Eggers told Lewis this is just the latest example of DeSantis’ “principled leadership.”
“It’s a big deal — and not just for auto insurance,” Eggers said. “The major issue plaguing Florida has been property insurance. Special sessions have been called, and affordability has become a crisis for many Floridians. One proposal even considers eliminating property tax to offset costs. By solving one problem — auto insurance — DeSantis is helping to solve another: property insurance. It’s a major win.”
Eggers says the Florida Chamber of Commerce also played a major role.
“They’ve long battled the trial lawyer lobby. Tort reform — hard caps on attorney fees — finally curbed predatory behavior that had become almost a sport in Florida,” Eggers said. “There’s also a regulatory side: the Office of Insurance Regulation found that Progressive was overcharging and forcing rebates. It’s both consumer-driven and regulator-enforced reform — and it’s working.”
Eggers and Lewis also discuss New York City mayoral frontrunner Zohran Mamdani.
It’s Capitalism vs. Communism — don’t miss it.
