Well Rich, you really stepped in it this time.
One can only imagine what was going through Connecticut Senator Richard Blumenthal’s head when he accepted an invitation to speak at an awards ceremony for Communist Party affiliate the Connecticut People’s World Committee; they were celebrating the 102nd anniversary of the Communist Party USA and actively recruiting new CPUSA members.
…sounds like Sen. Blumenthal is interested —hand him a pamphlet.
Blumenthal joined the Amistad Awards as a surprise guest (although we’re not sure exactly who got the surprise, here). The Senator presented award certificates to State Sen. Julie Kushner (D-Danbury), Pastor Rodney Wade of Waterbury and SEIU activist Azucena Santiago.
“I am really excited and honored to be with you today and share in this remarkable occasion,” Blumenthal said. (Again, the occasion is a Communist Party anniversary and recruitment event.)
Blumenthal says he was there to honor “the great tradition of activism and standing up for individual workers that is represented by the three honorees,” but also took some time to sell President Biden’s $1.85 trillion dollar Build Back Better bill.
“There’s a lot to be working for in economic justice, in racial equity, in establishing a $15 minimum wage,” Blumenthal said, “and holding corporations accountable for the basic treatment of the American people. We need to look at our entire tax system, beginning with Build Back Better.”
But it wasn’t until emcee Ben McMannus got on the mic that the party really got started.
“We invite you to join the Communist Party in this epic time as we make good trouble to uproot systemic racism, retool the war economy, tax the rich, address climate change, secure voting rights and create a new socialist system that puts people, peace and planet before profits,” McMannus said.
Democrats have worked hard to separate themselves from this kind of far-left rhetoric —including Joe Biden during the 2020 presidential campaign who, at one point, bragged about defeating Democratic-Socialist Bernie Sanders in the primaries. But Blumenthal? Nah. He’s all for making new friends. Well, until they find out he’s worth $100 million dollars — his buddies might not be so keen to have him back for the next anniversary celebration.
Look on the brightside: maybe this will help people forget he lied about serving in Vietnam.
