The GOP consensus: David Weiss cannot be trusted…
U.S. Attorney David Weiss, who has been investigating Hunter Biden on criminal charges, officially asked Merrick Garland to appoint him as Special Counsel —Garland obliged.
“This appointment confirms my commitment to provide Mr. Weiss all the resources he requests,” Garland said. “It also reaffirms that Mr. Weiss has the authority he needs to conduct a thorough investigation and to continue to take the steps he deems appropriate independently based only on the facts and the law,” Garland added in a brief press conference on Friday.
“As Special Counsel, he will continue to have the authority and responsibility that he has exercised previously to oversee the investigation and decide where, when, and whether to file charges,” Garland added. “The Special Counsel will not be subject to the day-to-day supervision of any official of the Department, but he must comply with the regulations, procedures, and policies of the Department.”
Shortly after Garland’s appointment, prominent GOP voices raged on X and in official statements, condemning the move and accusing Biden’s DOJ of orchestrating a coverup.
“David Weiss can’t be trusted and this is just a new way to whitewash the Biden family’s corruption,” Jordan spokesman Russell Dye said. “Weiss has already signed off on a sweetheart plea deal that was so awful and unfair that a federal judge rejected it.
“We will continue to pursue facts brought to light by brave whistleblowers as well as Weiss’s inconsistent statements to Congress,” he added.
House Oversight Committee Chairman James Comer released a statement on X, saying “The Biden Justice Department is trying to stonewall congressional oversight.”
“The Justice Department’s misconduct and politicization in the Biden criminal investigation already allowed the statute of limitations to run with respect to egregious felonies committed by Hunter Biden,” the statement reads.
“Justice Department officials refused to follow evidence that could have led to Joe Biden, tipped off the Biden transition team and Hunter Biden’s lawyers about planned interviews and searches, and attempted to sneakily place Hunter Biden on the path to a sweetheart plea deal,” the statement continues.
Even Speaker of the House Kevin McCarthy weighed in, adding his concerns that the Biden DOJ is trying to whitewash the alleged crimes of the Biden family.
“This action by Biden’s DOJ cannot be used to obstruct congressional investigations or whitewash the Biden family corruption,” he wrote on X. “If Weiss negotiated the sweetheart deal that couldn’t get approved, how can he be trusted as a Special Counsel? House Republicans will continue to pursue the facts for the American people.”
We have every reason to mistrust Weiss and the Biden DOJ. Things are about to get messy…
