Key Points
- The Biden Administration was still making evacuation plans while the Taliban was sacking Kabul.
- They still hadn’t settled on many elementary evacuation decisions, putting American lives in jeopardy.
- Leaked documents are peppered with the word “immediately,” proving they were behind on many tasks.
It’s already the darkest mark on a presidency lousy with dark marks. President Biden’s botched Afghanistan withdrawal was a bloody, unforced error that cost American lives and made the country’s leadership look absolutely foolish on the world stage —Xi and Putin were watching.
Almost 6 months out, we’re still learning just how poorly planned the whole thing was. And it’s not as bad as you think —it’s worse. According to leaked documents from a White House situation room the day before Kabul fell, the Biden administration didn’t have its act together on many basic, “Evacuation 101” tasks.
Here are some interesting tidbits, as shared by Axios:
Outsiders were frustrated and suspicious the administration was having plenty of meetings but was stuck in bureaucratic inertia and lacked urgency until the last minute.
While the word “immediately” peppers the document, it’s clear officials were still scrambling to finalize their plans — on the afternoon of Aug. 14.
For example, they’d just decided they needed to notify local Afghan staff “to begin to register their interest in relocation to the United States,” the document says.
And they were still determining which countries could serve as transit points for evacuees.
If you think that sounds like the Biden administration was in a rush because it waited until the day before Kabul fell to tell certain allies that they needed to get out of Afghanistan —while simultaneously not knowing where the heck they were going to send them —you’re right.
That’s what happened.
Oh, and here’s an unsettling fact: the National Security Council’s “summary of conclusions” document regarding “Relocations out of Afghanistan” was for a meeting held on the afternoon of Aug 14th, 3:30-4:30PM EST.
Right about the time the Taliban was kicking in Kabul’s front door.
