Key Points

  • Senator Marco Rubio (R-FL) says it’s time for the GOP to break up with big business.
  • Rubio will start to differentiate himself by stepping up as the leading proponent of the working class.
  • “I’m not here to tell you big business is the enemy. But I’m here to tell you big business is not our ally in the fight against socialism.”

Marco Rubio (R-FL) is picking a lane for his (no-doubt) competitive reelection bid next year – and his strategy may surprise even the sharpest political prognosticators. According to Axios, Rubio will differentiate himself by stepping up as the leading proponent of the working class.

That’s right. This isn’t your 2015, 2016, or even 2017 Marco Rubio. The Sunshine State Senator is breaking up with big business. A crazy gambit, to be sure. But will it work? Maybe.

The Drill Down’s own Peter Schweizer has been trumpeting the dangers of big business and big government for years. In a recent podcast, Schweizer discusses the corruptive relationship between financial titan Blackrock, the Federal Government and the housing market.

“When big government and big business are sitting down to share a meal, taxpayers and citizens are usually the main course…We should not be free business, we should be pro free market.”

So maybe Rubio is on to something here. During his speech “We Need Corporate Patriotism to Defeat American Marxism,” the Florida senator warns against the dangers of “so-called ‘Marxist-style’ policies by Democrats,” including Biden’s “Build Back Socialist” program.

He’s also wary of corporate leaders who identify themselves as “citizens of the world.”

“They are the product of decades of anti-American indoctrination at our elite universities and they feel no obligation to America or its national interest,” Rubio said of America’s corporate leaders. “I’m not here to tell you big business is the enemy. But I’m here to tell you big business is not our ally in the fight against socialism.”

He also isn’t fond of corporations outsourcing jobs to other countries like China, painting them as the enemy of American interests and just after a profit

“Most dangerous of all, the Chinese Communist Party figured out a way to use our own corporations against us,” Rubio said. “Inviting them in as partners, stealing their know-how and secrets, turning them into lobbyists in Washington on behalf of their agenda, and ultimately standing up their own companies to replace ours.”

“The real fight isn’t about the tax rate on billionaires,” Rubio added. “The real fight is about a small, radical, but incredibly powerful minority that wants to… erase our culture and traditions, throw away our values, and walk away from a free enterprise economy that is still the envy of the world.”

Could this be enough to stave off competition from Rep. Val Demings from Florida’s 10th congressional district? Maybe. Rubio already has a 4-10% lead depending on which poll you’re watching. But one has to wonder if Marco will run this playback come 2024, with his sights set on a much grander prize.

Time will tell.
