Chao and McConnell, a Kroger Story

Why would Senator Mitch McConnell, one of the most famously partisan members in Congress, sign on to an extremely expensive Democratic bill?

Well, one of the characteristics of any massive bipartisan spending bill is that it offers a little something for everyone, including Sen. McConnell.

In the latest episode of the Drill Down podcast, co-hosts Peter Schweizer and Eric Eggers note that McConnell’s wife, Elaine Chao, was recently named to the board of directors at the Kroger grocery conglomerate.

Before joining Kroger, Chao was Secretary of Transportation under President Trump. It was during this time that Kroger issued a report detailing plans to ramp up its “recycling infrastructure” by working with local and state governments and to push for “expansion” of recycling infrastructure with outreach to industrial and governmental forums.

Chao joined Kroger on August 5th, and the bill passed the Senate just a few days later. The final version of the Senate bill included a provision for grant money, totaling $15 million, to “improve effectiveness of residential and community recycling programs through public education and outreach.”

The bill has yet to be signed into law, but don’t be surprised if Kroger is one of the first companies to pounce on McConnell’s bipartisan bucket of cash.
