Key Points
- President Biden initially said payouts for migrant families detained at border was “garbage.”
- The White House corrected the President saying he is “perfectly comfortable” with the idea.
- Opponents of the payouts worry it may encourage more illegal migration.
President Biden’s handlers are unhappy. The puppeteers over on Pennsylvania Avenue want Biden to think payouts for migrant families separated at the border is a great idea. There’s just one problem: Biden thinks it’s a “garbage” idea.
According to the Wall Street Journal, the DOJ in cooperation with Homeland Security and Health and Human Services “are considering payments that could amount to close to $1 million a family” for migrants detained and separated at the border under President Trump.
The total payouts could exceed $1 billion dollars.
When Fox News correspondent Peter Doocy asked Biden if the payouts might invite more illegal immigration, Biden snapped back.
“If you guys keep sending that garbage out? Yeah. But it’s not true,” Biden shot back.
“So this is a garbage report?” Doocy followed up.
“Yeah. $450,000 per person — is that what you’re saying? That’s not gonna happen.”
But it sounds like it’s happening.
Shortly after Biden’s ‘garbage’ remark, the White House stepped in to “clarify” the President’s stance on handing out cash to migrants at the border.
“President Biden is ‘perfectly comfortable’ with cash payouts to migrant families whose members were detained separately after illegally crossing the US-Mexico border, White House Deputy Press Secretary Karine Jean-Pierre said Thursday,” the New York Post reports.
“If it saves taxpayer dollars and puts the disastrous history of the previous administration’s use of zero tolerance and family separation behind us, the president is perfectly comfortable with the Department of Justice settling with the individuals and families who are currently in litigation with the US government,” Jean-Pierre said during the White House press briefing.
And here comes the “clarification”…
“The president, what he was reacting to, was a figure that was mentioned, that you mentioned to him yesterday… DOJ made clear to the plaintiffs that the reported figures are higher than anywhere that a settlement can land.”
Ah, okay. Because we thought Biden had a moment of clarity and realized it’s a terrible idea to hand out money to migrant families illegally trying to enter the United States.
But, I guess we were wrong.
Thanks for clearing that up Deputy Press Secretary Karine Jean-Pierre.
