Andy, Reg & Mu kick it old school and talk about their very first computer experiences. Be prepared to consult Wikipedia, though, ’cause the guys (Reg & Andy, at least) reminisce about some pretty obsolete tech!

  1. I’m with you guys on this one, except for Mu, what a Newb! 2-8-6…. you haven’t lived until you have had to deal with a computer that takes metal memory sheets for backups!

I remember playing “Madness and the Minotaur” on my Trash-80 using the tape drive. My copy ended up with a problem on one side of the tape, nothing worse than finding out 10 minutes later that you are loading from the bad side of the tape.

Did either of you have the Timex Sinclair?

  2. I never had the Sinclair, but I had a friend who had a Vic-20. Remember that? Check out the links for extra special reminisce-y goodness. There’s a link to a playable version of Mather & Woods’ “Adventure” that I mentioned in the show.

  3. Those early days of computing were the best. My dad ran the computer department for the local police station back then. Basicly, if you knew what a computer was you were selected to run the department.

He ended up taking classes and learned assembly and C, ended up writing all the software for the department (you could not buy such things back then) and was loved by the girls in accounting. Eventually he retired and the department scrapped all his work and hired an outside vendor. gone were the days of calling the guy in the computer room and asking for a software change.

We had the Sinclair. We even had Pong before we got our 2600.

Do you remember the “Hard Card”? I think I still have a 20MB one in a box somewhere.
